Strike Action

The ASTI has informed the Board of Directors of this school that its members voted to withdraw their services from all second-level schools and colleges on Tuesday 24th November.

The Board of Directors will not be in a position to provide classes and full supervision for the pupils in the school.  The legal advice which our representative association, the JMB, has received is that schools will not be in a position to meet their responsibilities under health and safety legislation with regard to ensuring the safety of pupils in schools when teachers have withdrawn their services on that day.

The Board of Directors is therefore requesting parents to keep their son(s) / daughter(s) at home from school on Tuesday 24th November.  Some boarders will not be able to leave the school and a supervision rota will be maintained for their health and safety.  Supervised study and activities along with the use of the schools recreational facilities will be available for those boarders.  The ASTI is advising its members in boarding schools to provide cover necessary to protect pupils and ensure their safety.

The ASTI is allowing a limited derogation of Principals and Deputy Principals to allow them to discharge certain functions related to their contractual obligations to the Board.. In the circumstances of our boarding section, those contractual obligations are wide ranging and constitute an absolute duty of care.  Other privately paid staff will be available to help too

Should the strike be cancelled there will be a normal school day on Tuesday 24th November.

Yours sincerely,

F. Appelbe
Chairman of the Board of Directors
