Olympiad Winners!

Congratulations to 2 of our Transition year students, medal winners in the Irish Junior Science Olympiad, held in DCU recently.

Killian Long was awarded the gold medal, receiving the top mark of all those taking part in the competition, with Daniel Rowell claiming one of 3 bronze medals on offer.

To qualify for the Irish final, participants had to have received at least 6 A’s in higher level papers in the junior certificate in 2009, including an ‘A’ in both higher maths and science, and then faced an exam consisting of 60 questions.

Killian recorded an incredible 53 correct answers, most annual winners failing to reach 50, and he emerged the clear winner, with Daniel not far behind. As a result of his gold medal success, Killian will now travel to Azerbaijan in early December for the World Science Olympiad, and hopes are high that he will do very well in this competition.

Unfortunately Daniel hasn’t yet received his travel papers, but he is on standby, being a reserve in case one of the other participants doesn’t travel. Congratulations to the 2 lads, their families and the science department at Bandon Grammar School on this outstanding success.
