Debating Society Report Spring Summer 2017

Bandon Grammar Debating Society has had a terrific term. Our weekly debate meetings have covered a number of fun and relevant current issues and we have had some recent national and international success from a number of students in Form 4 and Form 5.
Congratulations to Katy O’Connor on reaching the All Ireland Schools Debating Finals

On Saturday 14th April, Katy O’Connor represented Bandon Grammar in the All Ireland Schools Debates Finals. Katy had been through five gruelling rounds of the UCC Philosoph Debates and one All-Ireland qualifier debate, arguing motions as diverse as ‘this house believes the left has failed’ and ‘this house supports the demise of religion’. In the Aula Maxima of UCC, in a room with 12 of the best debaters in Ireland out of a competition of 700 students, Katy proposed the motion that ‘this house would be Machiavellian’. Katy, alongside teams from Rochestown College and Mount Mercy, represented Munster debaters. Katy did extremely well, narrowly missing out to a team from Rochestown College and an Individual Speaker from Catholic University School. Fantastic Work Katy! She joins the ranks of Graham Norton, a former BGS student who also reached this latter stage of the competition.

Bandon Grammar Success at the National Stages of EYP
On April 17-20, three BGS students took part in the National Session of European Youth Parliament h. Inish Ruane-Crisson, Theo Dillon and Katy O’Connor did the school proud, negotiating heady topics in a fraught political landscape. Katy was chosen to represent Ireland Internationally, at the upcoming International European Youth Parliament at a location to be decided. Well done to all involved!
Daragh Ryan achieves at the Baku International Model United Nations
Well done to Cian Lynch and Daragh Ryan on their successful trip to Baku International Model United Nations, Azerbaijan, over Easter. Travelling with Mr Buttimer and after a few months of fundraising, Cian and Daragh were the only students representing Ireland. Daragh won ‘Most Distinguished Delegate’ for his role as Ukraine in the Security Council.
Jessica Gill to travel to Kenya with ActionAid -25 June
Jessica Gill and Ms Morley will be travelling to Kenya with ActionAid, to experience a number of development projects supported by the NGO, as a result of Jessica’s recent success in the national speechwriting competition.
Charlotte Orme and Sadbh Ruane Crisson won our recent Junior Debate Competition and there is huge potential among Juniors, from Fionn Magee (Form 1) and Greg Tarr (Form 2) to other first year students who have recently tried out their oratory skills. All students are welcome to join us at our weekly meetings!
