Spanish Trip 2018

This year our second year students went to Madrid on an exchange with Spanish school Salesianos Atocha. On Saturday morning the 10th of March we left the school with our teachers Mr McMahon, Mr J Twomey, Mrs Caballero and 29 Irish students heading to Madrid. When we arrived in Madrid at 9 o’clock we were met by a horde of screaming Spanish students waving massive homemade posters with our names on them! We took a group photo and then we went home with our new Spanish families. We met up the next morning in the school which is in the centre of Madrid and spoke about the new food we have tried. We then went to a shopping centre together and later on visited a bowling alley.

The next day we met at the school again and stayed for one class then had a Spanish culture presentation by the students. We tried Spanish dancing and played a football match against them. We walked to the Retiro park and admired the amazing scenery followed by rowing and churros with chocolate. We played sports with the Spanish and continued our day with our students.

On Tuesday, we visited the Royal Palace and learned lots of history with a guide and ear pieces. We had a city centre walking  tour and were pleased to have a few hours to shop in Puerta del Sol.

The following day we visited the Reina Sofía Museum to see a fabulous artwork painted by Picasso and then got the bus to the Bernabéu Stadium and got a behind the scenes tour and saw lots of impressive trophies and technology. We walked back to the school after that and had a lovely evening with the Spanish, with some of the boys who went go-karting.

On Thursday we all went on a relaxing trip to Segovia, a very attractive town with plenty of photo opportunities like an impressive aqueduct and a castle. We had a few hours to ourselves again and did our last bit of shopping before going back to Madrid. We spent the last few hours with our students together that evening.

We had an early start on Friday and said our sad goodbyes with the Spanish waving us off with the hopes of a safe flight.

Overall it was a great experience and amazing trip for all of us, we benefited from learning more Spanish and getting to know the culture and making more friends. We would all love to go back again and visit Madrid in the future.

Thank you to our great teachers that accompanied us on the trip
