Senior Rugby Pres Bray 27-28 BGS Match Report
In what was the final game for each school before their respective senior cup campaigns commenced, this was sure to be a feisty, intense and demanding game.
Played adjacent to the Wicklow mountains and the coastline, conditions proved perfect for this highly skilled encounter.
The grammar showed no signs of fatigue following their near 4 hour journey as they dominated the ball early on but bray went in front through a sweetly struck penalty. This was until the away side secured good lineout ball from Michael Archer and Tom Beare's perfectly timed pass to a bursting Josh Dalton cut through the Pres Bray midfield, Beare following his pass reconnected with his fellow center to power across the white wash. Soren Minihane added the simple conversion. 7-3 Bandon
Bandon continued their dominance with another 6 points secured from the left boot of Minihane to stretch the lead to 13-3, moments later, he had another bite of the cherry from the 10 meter line but was unprofitable this time.
Pres Bray then immediately struck back with a penalty of their own
This gave Pres momentum as they started to see a lot more of the ball.
The game being dominated by physical battles across the pitch, pres decided to play it wide and this payed dividends as they crossed in the corner, conversion also followed up.
13-13 a piece at the interval, nothing was going to a separate these sides.
Reenergized, a Quick tap penalty on half way saw scrum half ciaran Roberts and fullback Rowan Palmer connect to put minihane through space down the wing .Nick Greene then received the offload with a great support line , this eventually saw our little welsh wizard Ciaran Roberts snipe over to add another 5.
Conversion added from Minihane
Grammar came roaring back once again. Niall Beamish putting in big carries with David Ogden and Josh Brady causing havoc at rucktime . Following a turnover from Ogden, fullback Palmer danced his way through the Bray defense which eventually saw captain beamish barrel over in the corner for the west cork outfit. Minihane was unable to convert this time
Pres bay then picked up the pace and registered a well documented backline move which got them within 5 meters of the grammar line. Using their heavy pack, Pres Bray then eventually bundled over with again the flyhalf adding the extras, Pushing grammars lead back to just 5.
Minihane then added another penalty to push the lead back to 8 for the last 5 minutes
However Pres Bray struck again with crisp passing which saw them dart over to bring the lead back to 3 points. This set up a hectic last 2 minutes for the boys in green.
After an impressive defensive display in the final moments which started with a David Twomey rip from the pres prop, the Wicklow side eventually knocked it on.
